GA Senior Wins Global Leader Award

Garcia Vargas feels that no contribution to society can be too small. And while her own contribution thus far may be small, it has already paid a dividend for the Greenwich Academy senior. Vargas has received a $2,000 award in The World Affairs Forum's 2010 Future Global Leader of Fairfield County Scholarship Program.

"Up until now, my 'leadership' roles have been limited to school clubs and very local activities, such as volunteering at church," she said. "However, winning the third runner-up reinforces the belief that every contribution, no matter how small, really can make a difference."

The Stamford-based Forum educates the public about global affairs and the role America plays in the world. Its Global Leaders program recognizes the work young adults have done in the community and their understanding of global issues.

Vargas won a Future Global Leader Award at Greenwich Academy this past June, which motivated her to apply for the World Affairs Forum scholarship. As part of the application, Vargas composed an essay about the importance of education in world affairs.

"Hopefully, with college to look forward to, I will have the opportunity to make even bigger contributions," she said. "Maybe through international programs or programs abroad.
