DiPietro broke his right leg in a 2014 accident. Complications following the accident forced physicians to amputate the lower part of the leg.
DiPetro had surgery on the leg last November at Yale New-Haven hospital. Prior to the amputation, physicians tried a variety of methods to save the leg, including rehabilitation, therapy and surgery.
DiPietro, a 14-year member of the department, is a highly-decorated member of the Marine Section. He and his partner, Shawn Fox were named the Officer of the Year and the department's Clarke Award winner in 2014. The Clarke Award is presented by the Greenwich Lions Club and recognizes outstanding service.
The award was due in part to DiPietro and Fox stopping a speeding cigarette boat that racing across Long Island Sound, traveling more than 50 mph. The boat had thrown its operators. After futile attempts to slow the boat by throwing rope into the propellers, Fox drove a boat parallel to the runaway. DiPietro leaped from the police boat onto the threatening vessel, and shut down the motor.
""Absolutely, I am not going to lie, but this is the oath that he and I both took," Di Pietro said in a Daily Voice story in 2014. "There was no choice, somebody was going to be hurt."
A GoFundMe page raised more than $8,000 for DiPietro, who is described on the page as a “loving and dedicated husband and father.”
On the Greenwich Police Facebook page, DiPietro was welcomed back. “After months of a challenging and a medically complex recovery process, Frank is now one of a half-dozen police officers in Connecticut to return to full duty after losing a limb. Welcome Back Frank, we missed you!!” the post said.
DiPietro lives in Stamford with his wife, Krista, and two young children.
