Julian Zarate, 18, approached Aris D. Villadiego, 18, in a menacing manner in the Student Center at about 2:15 p.m., police said. Zarate pushed Villadiego, causing the two of them to scuffle, police said.
Their friends jumped in to break them up to stop the altercation, police said.
Zarate left the area but returned to get his coat, police said. Villadiego was still being held by his friends, but he was able to break free and attacked Zarate and attempted to punch him several times, police said.
The two were buddies whose friendship broke down over comments made about a past relationship, police said.
Police said Zarate noticed three small cuts in his coat and Villadiego had a small 2.5-inch utility knife in his hand.
Villadiego, of 249 Glenville Road, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, second-degree breach of peace and second-degree reckless endangerment. He was released on a promise to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Dec. 10.
Zarate, of 54 Weaver St., was issued a $103 ticket on a charge of creating a public disturbance, police said.
The case may not end there. Possession of a weapon on school grounds and use of a weapon in or out of school mandates a hearing in front of the Board of Education and the possibility of expulsion from school for up to one year, according to Greenwich Time.
