Two-way traffic on the road was shut down for seven hours shortly after 3 p.m. following the accident. The driver's SUV hit a utility pole and completely rolled over, landing on its back wheels, police said. The pole was completely severed and was held up by the power lines. Police said that any car accident is serious, but the introduction of uncontrolled electrical currents makes it much more dangerous for drivers and first responders.
Police said the driver was wearing his seatbelt and was clearly shaken up, but was not injured. He told officers that he was unable to explain why he had driven off the road, only that he had "zoned out" and was not paying attention and lost control of the car. Police said there were no environmental factors that would have created a situation for a car to leave the road. The accident occurred during the daylight hours with favorable weather conditions, and the driver was sober, police said.
"Fortunately, no one got hurt so the young operator only has to explain to his parents and insurance company what 'zoning out' means," police said.
The driver was cited for unsafe movement. Police are reminding drivers to keep their eyes on the road, their hands on the wheel, and their mind on driving and to always wear their seatbelts.
