GREENWICH, Conn. Selma Ash of Old Greenwich died July 22 at her home in Riverside. She was 90.
She was born Selma Victoria Finch on June 24, 1922, in Stamford to Robert and Jennie Hagstrom Finch. In 1927, the family moved to Irvine Road in Old Greenwich. Ash remained in Old Greenwich until 2008, when she moved to Hill House Senior Residence in Riverside.
After attending Greenwich public schools, Ash graduated from the Greenwich Hospital Nursing School in 1943. She joined the U.S. Army and served as a nurse on military bases in Florida and Louisiana as a second lieutenant.
After the war, she married Frank Ash and raised three children on Park Avenue. She enjoyed playing card games and watching baseball and was known for her sense of fair play and wise counsel.
She is survived by three children, Chris Ash, Fran Gerrior and Cindy Strait; three sons-in-law, Dan George, Charlie Gerrior Sr. and Don Strait; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends, including Audrey Schilling and Estelle Wray. Her husband, Frank Ash, predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, at First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich. Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
