West Putnam Accident Results in Tragedy

The serious motor vehicle accident that closed West Putnam Avenue at the New York State line Friday morning resulted in the death of a pedestrian.

The accident occurred at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the area of 702 W. Putnam Ave. A black pickup truck made a right turn from Byram Road onto U.S. 1/West Putnam Avenue when a pedestrian entered the roadway from the grassy median on the north side of Route 1. The 55-year-old female pedestrian was severely injured and initially was cared for by the truck's driver and witnesses.

Greenwich Police, Port Chester Police and Port Chester EMS responded to several 911 calls. Lifesaving measures were done at the scene. GEMS transported the woman to the Greenwich Hospital emergency room. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The victim's name was being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. Police said she had a connection to Greenwich.

Police blocked eastbound traffic into Greenwich from Port Chester, N.Y., via U.S. Route 1 while they investigated the accident. The road was open by 11 a.m. Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for the Greenwich Police Department, said members of the traffic section were at the scene.
