The heat wave that spread throughout the Northeast earlier this week contributed to 4,000 in Greenwich without power Monday night through Tuesday. Contrary to published reports, Connecticut Light and Power spokesman denied on Friday afternoon the power outages were a result of high heat melting underground cables. Thats incorrect, it makes it sound like the heat caused underground cables to melt, said Gross. I have no idea why they would have said that.
Gross said the equipment problems resulted from a heightened demand for power usage to cool homes and businesses during the hottest days of the week. Higher power usage causes more currents to flow through cables, which creates more heat, which causes more equipment to break down. Its a domino effect, he said.
