GREENWICH, Conn. Pauline Elizabeth Bettie Horton, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, died Tuesday, Nov. 15. She was 92.
She was born on Sept. 15, 1919, and attended Cos Cob Elementary School. She graduated from Greenwich High School in 1937 and from the Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. Horton then immediately signed up to serve in World War II, seeing duty with the 7th Army Nurse Corps in England, France and Germany. She achieved the rank of first lieutenant by 1945.
Horton married her husband, Jared, in 1947 at Christ Church Greenwich, where they both had been baptized and confirmed and where her parents had been married in 1917. She served as a Sunday school teacher at the church, as president of the Episcopal Church Women, director of the Altar Guild and president of the Greenwich Church Women United. She was also a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and a leader for both Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts.
She is survived by four daughters, Janette Hall, Cynthia Carpenter, Allison Horton and Juliana Horton; four grandchildren, Julie and Meredith Hall, and Natalie and Daniel Riecker; two sons in-law, Thomas Hall and Jeff Carpenter; and a daughter-in-law, Toby Earley. She was predeceased by her husband after 62 years of marriage.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, at Christ Church Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Altar Guild of Christ Church Greenwich, 254 E.
