Neighbor to Neighbor is busy preparing for the holidays. Volunteers in the food pantry help clients get the things they need for the week, while others sort donated clothing. With dozens of donation bags arriving daily, the volunteers and executive director Cathy Lynch are inundated.
"We worry about the day before Thanksgiving and the day after," said Lynch. "People are doing their shopping before the holiday, which is why we are so busy. If turkeys come in, that is lovely, and we give them out to our clients, but we give out food weekly, which is very unusual for a food pantry."
Lynch said there is always a need for food and clothing in town. People who live on a fixed income depend on Neighbor to Neighbor to get by. "We give out 300,000 meals a year," Lynch said. "One of our challenges is that we just don't have a lot of space. We are up 50 percent [in number of clients] over the last two years, so we are just bursting at the seams."
Lynch said their clients have needs throughout the year, not just during the holidays. "These people will be here next week. They can come once [a week] any time Monday through Saturday. People depend on us for their food. They need weekly help and that is what we provide."
With the influx of donations, the organization needs volunteer help. Lynch said they need people Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
