Longtime Greenwich resident and avid footballer and golfer Milton J. Altznauer died from cancer at Greenwich Hospital on Oct. 3. He was 72.
Altznauer grew up in Parma, Ohio, where he was captain of the football team and later inducted into the Parma High Hall of Fame. He was recruited as a linebacker for Miami University, where he was nicknamed, "The Animal." Before graduating in 1960, Altznauer had a number of offers to play for pro football teams, including the Cleveland Browns.
But he chose a different career path and began working with Reynolds and Reynolds, a printing company in Ohio. Altznauer worked there for more than 30 years until he opened his own communications firm called AF Designs in 1990.
According to his family, Altznauer called the Innis Arden Golf Club a home away from home for more than 40 years. He played golf there on a regular basis and won many tournaments. Altznauer loved to watch his favorite teams, the Jets and the Yankees. He also enjoyed traveling, saltwater fishing and reunions with his buddies at the "Knights of the Innis Arden Round Table."
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Garapick Altznauer; son, Gregory; and two grandchildren. Services will be private. Memorial donations can be made to the Greenwich Point Conservancy, P.O. Box 377, Greenwich, CT 06870.
