Louis Ewald, Retired Publishing Executive

Louis Philip Ewald, a publishing and public service executive who lived in Greenwich, died on May 8. He was 90 years old.

Ewald was born in Kentucky in 1920. He graduated from Groton School in 1938 and from Yale University in 1942, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year and president in his senior year.

He served in WWII in the Navy as as officer in Communication Intelligence, where he was chosen as an editor of “The Daily Intelligence Summary” for the  President and Chiefs of Staff.

In 1946, Ewald started his publishing career as a non-fiction editor for McGraw Hill Book Company. He married Elizabeth Johnston, beauty editor for Harper’s Bazaar and they moved to Greenwich to start their family. For the next 20 years Ewald held senior management positions with The New Yorker Magazine, The Curtis Publishing Co. and the United Newspaper Magazine Corporation and was elected a director of the Magazine Publisher’s Association. In 1970 Ewald joined his friends Frank Pace Jr. and David Rockefeller to build the International Executive Service Corps in 150 foreign countries.

Ewald was predeceased by his wife. He is survived by two sons, Duncan Ewald of South Orange, N.J., and Douglass Alexander Ewald of Belmont, Mass., as well as three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at The Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Road, on Wednesday, June 1, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Round Hill Community Church, Ewald Family Memorial Fund for altar flowers.
