Mary Converse, a former Riverside resident, died at her home in Bradenton, Fla., on March 15. She was 84.
Converse was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio. She met and married Peter Converse in Schenectady, N.Y., where she worked for General Electric Co. They moved to Riverside, where she was a homemaker, a member of the Junior League and a volunteer for many civic organizations. She worked as a market researcher for McGraw-Hill and Palshaw Measurement. In Greenwich, she enjoyed playing golf at the Innis Arden Golf Club and sailing at the Riverside Yacht Club.
Once her children were grown, Converse moved to Vermont, where she earned a masters of arts and liberal studies at Dartmouth College. She wrote a biography of Mary Parker Converse, later published as "Captain Mary" by the American Merchant Marine Museum at Kings Point, N.Y.
Converse loved to travel and visited Japan, China, Egypt, Russia, Scandinavia and the South Pacific in her lifetime.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Converse of Maryland; her son Allen Converse of Florida; her sister Jean Allen Eveleth of Florida; and four grandchildren. She will be buried at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local hospice organization of your choice.
