Wine Boutique Uncorked in Banksville

Wine lovers in Banksville and Greenwich have something new to look forward to this holiday season — a rustic boutique called The Study. Co-owners Katherine Stephens and Noah Goldberg uncorked their enterprise on Nov. 13.

"I thought I wanted to open my own restaurant," said Stephens. "But then I thought if I do my favorite part of the job, which is the wine, and do retail, it's a little more containable."

Located at 1066 North St., the shop has the feel of a wine celler and is furnished with a cozy chair and table and a beautiful mini antique piano. "Noah and I both grew up in Connecticut, so it was natural for us to come back, and we found a great spot here [in Banksville]," said Stephens. "It has the feel of rural and beautiful ... but is also a little cosmopolitan."

Stephens began her career as a wine buyer and manager for a Michelin-rated restaurant in New York City. She is a certified wine specialist and educator and hopes to give wine classes in the new shop. One piece of advice Stephens would give wine enthusiasts, however, is that the best way to learn is by tasting the wine.

With a selection from all over the world, Stephens and Goldberg want to encourage their guests to enter uncharted wine territory. "We have two angles," Stephens said. "I want to have a lot of options from all over, and unknown, not brand name wines. But we also want to be accommodating to the neighborhood. If we don't have the type of wine [a customer wants], we'll order it."

Stephens also writes a wine blog. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Study can be reached at (203) 340-9410.
