Curtis Fletcher and his Cos Cob friends were shoveling and sculpting to win it. Too bad the annual Sandblast! Sculpture festival wasn't being judged, and their giant starfish couldn't be the star of the show.
"We would like it to go back to a competition," said Fletcher, who was accompanied by his wife, Michelle, his children, and the Decker, Connerty, Wallace, Kelley and Obermeser families.
While traditional castles were the most common sculpture, one group was attempting a difficult challenge Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. They were using roofing sheets to contain the sand before sculpting.
"If we take it off it might collapse, but we're hoping it'll act as an upside-down bucket," said Jim McGrath, who was working with his children and friends.
Lindsay and Edward Hasapis and their mother, Dawn, were sculpting a sailboat named the "Lind-Ward." "We're no professionals," said Dawn. "But we're having fun."
This year's Sandblast! at Greenwich Point was sponsored by the Greenwich Arts Council and the Department of Parks and Recreation, with special support by First County Bank. Though in years past, sculptures were judged, this year's festival takes a different approach giving ribbons and First County Bank T-shirts to all participants.
Participants were given wooden stakes embellished with colorful curly ribbons to mark their territory, along with First County Bank pails and shovels.
