The Rockin' Appalachian Mom Project, a Greenwich-based nonprofit group that concentrates on improving the lives poverty-stricken families, will host a food and wine benefit Saturday, Nov. 13.
"The people of Appalachia are so appreciative of our efforts to help," said Amy Guerrieri, founder of RAMP. "And now, to be able to bring the Appalachian heritage and story up to the New York area will be a great experience and one that will open the eyes to many about the dire issue of poverty here in the United States."
RAMP's work in Martin County, Ky., one of the poorest areas in the country, has made an incredible impact on the community. Its efforts provide basic needs through food drives, food pantries and school snack programs; to supply nutritional education for the community and schools; and add sustainability by creating income-generating projects to encourage jobs, income, economic growth and lasting change.
Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has given the organization an official proclamation for its work. This past summer, Whole Foods Market teamed with RAMP to take their education and nutrition programs to the region. It recently installed salad bars in public schools and held nutrition seminars in the community.
"RAMP has had an incredible 18+ months working in Kentucky," said Guerreri. "A group of volunteers from the Connecticut and New York area have been down there numerous times, working with the local residents and trying to help them with their nutritional needs."
The fundraising event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at Nelson Macker Fine Art in Port Chester, N.Y. Greenwich resident and Emmy award-winning meteorologist Bill Evans will be the emcee for the evening. Tickets are $125 and are available online. For more information, call 203-940-1152.
