Kids Learn Water Safety With Stewie

"Hey Stewie!" shouted 30 children at the Greenwich YMCA. Stewie the Duck joined Stew Leonard Jr., Kim Leonard and Y visitors for a reading of the couple’s book "Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim" and a lesson in water safety.

Stew Jr. said it takes only seconds for a tragic accident to happen.

He and Stewie the Duck stressed the importance of water safety and the dangers of swimming alone.

Rachel Reese, a Greenwich YMCA employee, said the age range of children at the event was 2 through 6 years. "Our main target was kids who are learning to swim."

After the death of their 21-month-old son in 1989 in a drowning accident, the couple pledged they would do everything they could to prevent such tragedies from happening to other families. The Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation was founded in 1990 in memory of their son. The organization has raised over $1 million toward water safety awareness and education.
