James Hayde Jr., 84, Formerly of Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. – James Joseph Hayde Jr., formerly of Greenwich, died May 22 at Greenwich Hospital. He was 84.

Born in Greenwich Feb. 15, 1928, he was the son of James Joseph Hayde Sr. and Elizabeth Fellman Hayde. He attended Greenwich schools and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1946. Hayde served in the National Guard as a rifleman for many years.

He was a longtime employee of Marr Brothers. Hayde also worked for DeMarkey's Millwork and later went on to be a partner in Greenwich Woodworking on Hamilton Avenue.

He also worked as a Realtor in town and provided private chauffeur service to New York City. Hayde most recently was a resident of Oxford, Conn. An avid golfer, Hayde was a longtime member of the Griff Harris Golf Course.

Hayde is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gertrude Murphy Hayde; two daughters, Deborah Ann Nash and Mary Patricia Gabriel; a son, Joseph James Hayde; and eight grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as "Pop Pop" and "Peaches."

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Greenwich. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Fred D. Knapp and Son Funeral Home in Greenwich.
