Group Seeks Awesome Tree Nominations

Do you have an awesome tree in your backyard? Snap a photo and nominate it for the Greenwich Tree Conservancy's third annual Greenwich Awesome Tree Contest.

Choose one of five categories for 2010, including Most Tenacious Tree, Most Interesting Bark Tree, Most Romantic Tree, Best Treehouse Tree or Tree with Widest Canopy. Nominations must include the tree's location, plus a reason why the public or privately owned tree should win its selected category.

To preserve and enhance the tree and forest resources and benefit the community's health and quality of life, Greenwich residents formed the conservancy in 2007. The contest's purpose is not only to showcase trees in the town, but also to raise awareness of the importance of preserving and maintaining trees.

To nominate your tree, pick up a nomination form at any of the town's libraries, Town Hall, a co-sponsor or download an application from the conservancy's website. Be sure to include a high-resolution digital photo of the tree or other high-quality photo. Submissions are limited to five trees per contestant and only one tree per category. All forms are due by Oct. 18.

Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Garden Education Center.

The contest is sponsored by the conservancy as well as the town of Greenwich, Garden Education Center, Bruce Museum, Audubon Greenwich, Greenwich Land Trust, Greenwich Green and Clean, Greenwich Libraries and Perrot Memorial Library.
