Supporters of the Soldiers for the Truth foundation raised more than $70,000 recently during a salute to the organizations founder, the late Col. David Hackworth of Greenwich. Nearly 200 people turned out for the foundations annual Best Equipment in Support of the Troops benefit, which took place at Richards on Greenwich Ave.
Soldiers for the Truth is an educational foundation that tries to ensure that frontline troops -- those at the tip of the spear -- have the best available leadership, training and equipment. It maintains an investigative news site to educate military and political leaders and the media on critical issues affecting the troops.
The highlight of the event was presentation of the 2010 Support the Troops with More than Lip Service Award to former U.S. Senator and Medal of Honor recipient Bob Kerrey. The award was presented by guest of honor Gen. Alfred M. Gray Jr., a retired Marine Corps commandant.
The Greenwich Choral Society and the Greenwich Silver Shield honor guard opened the evening by paying tribute to Hackworth. His widow and Soldiers for the Truth chair, Eihys England Hackworth, co-hosted the evening with B.E.S.T. benefit chair Shelly Tretter Lynch, Scott Mitchell of Richards of Greenwich, and Fred Tanne, president of the Soldiers for the Truth board.
The benefit was held on Nov. 23, the date of Hackworths death four years ago. The day has been officially designated Col. David Hackworth Day in Connecticut in honor of the man who was one of the most highly decorated soldiers of the Vietnam War.
