Afro-Cuban Drummer Berroa to Play in Greenwich

Come out to the Greenwich Library on Saturday and hear the beats of Grammy-nominated drummer Ignacio Berroa and his five-piece band. Berroa, a Cuban émigré, has played drums with some of jazz and Latin music’s most distinguished artists, including Dizzy GillespieChick CoreaCharlie Haden and Tito Puente.

Gillespie, who died in 1993, described Berroa as “the only Latin drummer in the world, in the history of American music, that intimately knows both worlds; his native Afro-Cuban music as well as jazz.” Berroa was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007.

Jazz great Wynton Marsalis had this to say about Berroa. “Ignacio plays with intelligence, taste, fire, and soul. His playing combines the finest aspects of Afro-Cuban and American styles of drumming.”

The concert, featuring guitarist Vic Juris, is free and open to the public. Doors open at 3 p.m. Saturday at the library’s Cole Auditorium. For more information, contact David Waring at (203) 622-7917.
