College of Wooster Ensemble To Present Concert At Christ Church Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. -- The highly acclaimed Wooster Chorus, an ensemble of 66 student musicians from the College of Wooster, will perform at Christ Church Greenwich on Tuesday, March 22, as part of the group's 52nd-annual spring tour.

This performance is from the 2014 Wooster Chorus spring tour. The chorus will be performing in Greenwich later this month.

Directed by Lisa Wong, the Wooster Chorus will share "an eclectic program of choral music that explores the notion of play, featuring the music of contemporary composers in a survey spanning the whimsical to the sublime," a news release notes.

Professional saxophonist J. Michael Holmes will join the chorus on two new works composed for chorus and saxophone. "Spring Tune" is the first, by Swedish composer Emil Råberg, from "Approximately Four Improvisations." It relies heavily on improvisation from the soloist and from the ensemble.

The second -- "a beautiful setting of a seventh-century chant melody clothed in a modern musical language" -- is arranged by English saxophonist Christian Forshaw.

This is Wong's seventh year at the College of Wooster, where she directs the Wooster Chorus and the Wooster Singers, and teaches courses in conducting and music education. She is also the assistant director of choruses for the Cleveland Orchestra. Wong has a bachelor's in music education from West Chester University, and a master's in music and a doctorate in choral conducting from Indiana University.

The Wooster Chorus was founded in 1964. It consists of students representing all academic areas within college's liberal arts program. The Chorus was a 2015 finalist for the American Prize in Choral Performance, and it has been praised for its beautiful sound, high level of artistry and engaging performances, the press release also noted.

The chorus collaborates annually with the Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, and it recently premiered works by Eric Whitacre and Jake Runestad. This year, the chorus was selected to perform at the Central Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association and the statewide conference of the Ohio Music Education Association.

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. The church is located at 254 E. Putnam Ave.
