"Greenwich and the state of Connecticut need citizens who are active and informed. The act of registering to vote is a signal that you care about your community," said Republican Registrar Fred DeCaro III.
According to the Rock the Vote, between 48 and 52 percent of registered 18-to-29-year-olds voted in 2012. The percentages are on the rise, and are in fact moving toward the 55 percent participation record set in 1972 -- for the presidential election held after the voting age was reduced from 21 to 18.
Democratic Registrar of Voters Sharon Vecchiolla has been participating in high school voter registration drives for more than 20 years. "Students find it difficult to register while away at college, the military or while working. Young people are more likely to vote if they register before they leave high school," she noted. "We hope many students take advantage of this chance to be registered and ready for the next election."
Even students who are currently 17 can register, as long as they will be 18 by November 8, the next scheduled election. Students with driver's licenses can also register to vote online this year.
Students will be able to register in the Student Center between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Photo ID is recommended but not required.
