Rider Pedals to Help Cancer Survivors

Chrisitian McEvoy pedaled his bike to nowhere, and was happy to do so Friday and Saturday at the Trek Bicycle Store in Fairfield. The Easton resident started riding at noon Friday and hoped to pedal 400 miles before noon Saturday.

McEvoy rode the bike to raise awareness for the Connecticut Challenge, a series of bike rides that leaves from Fairfield on July 24. Donations to support McEvoy and the Connecticut Challenge benefit programs that assist cancer survivors.

Through the first six hours of his virtual ride, McEvoy was ahead of schedule. He averaged 19.1 miles per hour, and he needed to stay above 16.6 to meet the 400-mile target. "The goal is to get ahead of it, '' McEvoy said. "The last 12 hours are going to hard." Through 10 hours, McEvoy had ridden 183.5 miles.

McEvoy ran from San Francisco to Rhode Island in 2006 in another charitable effort. This was his first spin marathon. "The most I've done on a trainer is 75 miles, the most outside is 130 miles,'' McEvoy said. "That makes it  fun. It will be interesting."

McEvoy, an Easton resident, said he'll take a week off from training after Saturday to recuperate. He'll participate in the Challenge, and his real goal is a solid showing at triathlon in Louisville in August. "This is just a long training ride,'' McEvoy said as he pedaled down a virtual road presented in front of him on a computer monitor.

People can monitor McEvoy's progress on Facebook. Riders in the Connecticut Challenge will participate in a training ride Saturday at 9 a.m. They will return in time for McEvoy's finish.
