The students were given a historical and architectural tour of the 125-year-old library, plus an exhibitions tour in the reading room, an exhibitions tour in The Perkin Gallery, and an art project consisting of written responses to the exhibition.
The school visit is part of Pequot’s outreach initiative to bring local schools into Pequot Library for a customized field trip to experience a special collections exhibition up close and personal.
Celebrating the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, Pequot’s current exhibition is "Pages from Pequot: Uncovering Shakespeare" and features items from Pequot Library's Special Collections of rare books and materials. The exhibition will run until May 6. It is open during normal library hours, and admission is free.
During the field trip, English students created iambic pentameter poems and read them aloud on Pequot Library’s stage. Also in the Auditorium, theater students put the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet into modern language and performed their contemporary versions for everyone.
The students were most excited about seeing the glass floor in the mezzanine and seeing the actual Fourth Folio of Shakespeare from 1685.
