Fred Garrity said he filed his candidate paperwork with Connecticut’s State Elections Commission earlier this week.

“I am running for state representative for very practical reasons,” said Garrity. “I believe that financial accountability at the state level needs improvement.”

In his statement, Garrity called for a number of reforms, including deeper and more frequent monitoring of the state’s finances, controlled spending and reduced taxes on small business and residents,

Garrity further questioned whether state leaders have been taking the best steps for education in Connecticut and whether the proper amount of resources were being allocated for the state’s infrastructure needs.

Garrity, who is currently serving his second term on the Planning and Zoning Commission, pointed to his resume as evidence for his viability as a candidate.

According to his statement, Garrity has served in senior leadership positions in commercial, municipal, organized labor and nonprofit organizations. He also has served on the Zoning Board of Appeals, various other elected and volunteer offices and is employed as director of Operations for Ruane Attorneys At Law, which as offices in Shelton, New London and Wethersfield.

Garrity said that despite his public service history, voters likely know him best for his other activities. He serves as executive director for the CT United Ride, the state’s largest 9/11 tribute.

Garrity was raised in Bridgeport and later graduated from Notre Dame High School in Fairfield. He holds an MBA from Albertus Magnus College and has lived in Trumbull for more than 40 years.

In his statement announcing his candidacy, Garrity quoted other local leaders who have already offered their support.

“Fred has a great feel for the pulse of the voters,” said Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau. “I am honored and privileged to know Fred Garrity. He has dedicated his life in service to others.”

Trumbull Town Treasurer Anthony Musto said Garrity “has always impressed me as someone who leads by actually working with everyone.

“His ability to lead bi-partisan efforts as chairman of Planning and Zoning has brought millions of dollars of economic development to our town.”

The 134th House seat is currently held by Laura Devlin, a Republican.
