FedEx Tractor-Trailer Rolls Over On Post Road In Southport

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A FedEx tractor-trailer rolled over on the Post Road in Fairfield early Wednesday after a collision with a small SUV, blocking the roadway until just before the morning rush-hour, the Fairfield Fire Department said.

Firefighters responded at 2:28 a.m. to the rollover in front of the Dunkin' Donuts of Southport at 3355 Post Road, Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola said.

The cab and front section of the tandem FedEx tractor-trailer were lying on the driver’s side of the roadway, with the rear tandem standing upright, said Fire Lt. Scott Trembley, who was the first officer on the scene and established command.

The SUV was parked in the center of the roadway, and all occupants were out of their vehicles. The driver of the tractor-trailer and the two female occupants of the SUV reported minor injuries but declined treatment.

The Fairfield Fire Department then addressed the environmental impact of the accident, which occurred within 10 feet of a storm drain and catch basin that leads directly to Southport Harbor.

The overturned tractor-trailer contained 80 gallons of diesel fuel and several gallons of motor oil that threatened to leak or rupture if not handled properly, Gomola said.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was contacted and worked with Fairfield firefighters, Budds Wrecker Service, and the cleanup contractor to flip the overturned tractor-trailer back onto its wheels and to minimize any environmental impact.

No injuries were reported by firefighters or recovery workers. The last fire unit left the scene shortly before 6 a.m.
