Fairfield Fire Department Frees Driver From SUV After I-95 Rollover

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A driver trapped in his rolled-over car after an accident Wednesday on southbound I-95 was freed by members of the Fairfield Fire Department.

The accident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. between Exit 22 and Exit 21, fire officials said.

Before extricating the driver of the SUV, first responders needed to stabilize the vehicle, which had become lodged against a tree in the embankment, fire officials said.

First responders were able to access the driver by using hydraulic tools to open the doors and remove the roof of the car. The driver was then taken to a waiting ambulance and then to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment.

One ladder truck was used to hold the exit sign to keep it from falling on emergency personnel and the patient. One of the two supporting steel I-beams had become detached.

The Connecticut State Police remained on the scene to continue the investigation after firefighters and the Department of Transportation representatives cleared the area shortly before noon Wednesday.
