Irene Smith Wasco, 86, Former Longtime Southport Resident

LINCOLN, Mass. - Irene Smith Wasco of Lincoln, formerly of Southport, died Tuesday, Nov. 12. She was 86.

Wasco was born in Bridgeport, to Harry and Mary Leist Smith. She had been a resident of Southport for over 50 years prior to moving to Lincoln to be closer to her family. She was a graduate of the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy Lauralton Hall. She worked for the Southern New England Telephone Company prior to raising her family and volunteered for churches and charitable organizations. She was a parishioner at St. Luke's Church in Westport and St Josephs' Church in Lincoln. She was a member of the Stratfield Garden Club.

Wasco is survived her children, Wilma Wasco of Arlington, Monica Becker (Brad) of Vernon and Jay Wasco (Stephanie) of Wayland; five grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; friend, Claire Zanella; and family. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, John; sisters, Helenmarie French, Geraldine Smith, and Sr. Bernice Smith; brother, Harry Smith; and in-laws, Bob and Bill Wasco, Eleanor Smith and George French.

Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. meeting directly at St. Luke's Church, 49 North Turkey Hill Road, Westport. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield. A memorial service will be held in Lincoln at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Open Door Soup Kitchen in Norwalk.
