Born in Turkey, Magarian and her family immigrated to Syria during the Armenian Genocide. She owned and her husband were fabric wholesalers in Beirut, Lebanon, for over 15 years. She was 65 when she moved from war-torn Beirut. After moving to Connecticut, she learned how to drive -- and continued until she was 90.
Magarian graduated from an English language program and took French classes, to stay fresh on her French. She also discovered a love of watercolor painting. She was also an avid crafter. She made countless sweaters and clothing for her children and grandchildren through the years, as well as amazing doilies, which the Fairfield Public Library displayed.
Magarian dedicated her time and talent to the Armenian community throughout her life. She was a member of the Armenian Relief Society for 65 years, and she donated to various organizations, specifically those aiding women and orphans. She was well-read on all things Armenian, and from a young age she devoured books. She was also on the executive board of her parish's ladies guild and loved to sing in the choir.
She is survived by her children, Levon and his wife Angela Magarian of New York City, and Sonia and her husband Arthur Gulbenk of Fairfield; grandchildren Marcus, Ani and Raffi; niece and nephew Hripsimé Plavdjian and Manouel Rakoubian; and many nieces and nephews in countries around the world.
Magarian was predeceased by her husband, Magar Magarian, and parents Manouel and Anita Rakoubian.
Visiting hours will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, in the Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension, 1460 Huntington Turnpike, in Trumbull, followed by the wake service at 7 p.m. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in the St. Thomas Cemetery, in Fairfield.
