WWII Vet and Volunteer Dies at 84

Friends and family will hold services to honor veteran and active volunteer James G. Wood on Tuesday. Raised in Bridgeport, Wood moved to Fairfield after serving in the Marines in the South Pacific during World War II. He spent his last few years in Shelton's Bishop Wickie Healthcare Center, where he died Aug. 27 at age 84.

After the war, Wood worked as an electrician for nearly six decades. He was also a leader in the community. He once served as president of St. Pius X Church's Holy Name society. He led young boys as an advisor for the Boy Scouts of America, which earned him the Bronze Pelican award from the Diocese of Bridgeport. He also umpired games for Lake Hill Little League and volunteered at the Fairfield Senior Center later in life.

Wood is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lillian Fox Wood; five children: James Wood and his wife, Martha, of Fairfield, David Wood and his wife, Carol, of Southbury, Gregory Wood and his wife, Beth, of Georgia, Cherie Walker and her husband, Jon, of Fairfield, and Cathie Walz and her husband, Thomas, of Massachusetts; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service is Tuesday at 915 a.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, continuing at St. Pius X Church at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to V.A.R.C.A., 5 Coon Hollow Road, Derby, CT 06418.
