Kids will flock to Penfield Beach this weekend to learn about the art of sand sculpting and then use those skills in a sand sculpting contest with a chance to have fun and win cool prizes. "It brings a new art form to the beach and inspires children to play in the sand and create in the sand," said Jill Walker, the Fairfield Beach Residents Association's special events coordinator. She says besides being fun, the event raised money for a worthy cause. "[We] offer this to the community every summer so they can really enjoy it."
The event is organized by the association and money will be raised to support CancerCare of Connecticut. Master sculptor Sean Fitzpatrick returns to town for a third year in a row and will build a sand boat that will be 12-feet wide and 10-feet tall. Children will have the opportunity on Saturday to take part in the Police Athletic League's Sand Sculpture Contest, also at Penfield Beach. Taking place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., prizes will be awarded for best castle, most artistic sculpture, most original sculpture and most realistic sculpture.
The resident association has paired with CancerCare to host a free skin cancer screening on Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The charity, which provides free professional support to anyone affected by cancer, will also be raising money at the beach. A rock-climbing wall will be set up for kids to use, with a donation for use going to CancerCare, Walker said.
Fitzpatrick will begin carving on Thursday and it will be completed on Sunday and then remain on view. Walker said the event "brings families together and people out. It's really just a fun family event for the weekend."
