Fairfields Town Hall Green is going to become more beautiful in the near future, if Catherine Albin has anything to say about it. The Board of Selectmen appointed Albin as chair of the brand-new Burr Homestead-Independence Hall Gardens Advisory Committee Wednesday evening. The new boards charge is to create a garden plan for town land around Sullivan Independence Hall and the Burr Homestead.
The vision for this area, Albin said, was that the gardens could be a rich area for the residents of Fairfield to enjoy.
Along with Albin, the Board also features Fairfield Tree Warden Ken Placko as a representative from the Department of Public Works. Two of Fairfields garden clubs will also have be involved in the committee, with Laura Fasano representing the Sasqua Garden Club and Ellen Gould joining her from the Fairfield Garden Club. Two other interested citizens, Lisa Claire and Jill Kelly, and Mike Jehle from the Fairfield Museum and History Center will round out the seven-member committee.
Albin said the committee would build on a plan started in the early 1990s for landscaping in the area. Since some of the plans ideas were never completed, she approached Flatto about starting this committee to finish the job.
The committee will be responsible for developing a new plan for building up the garden over the next few years. It will report to other town boards to issue progress reports, and to get final approval before making any changes to the landscape.
What sold the members of the Board of Selectmen, though was the projects cost to the townnothing. As part of their charge, the committee will also need to fund its projects through private donations.
Public works does maintain the area, and we hope that they will continue to so that, Albin said. But as far as the funds to actually do anything, that will be self-funded through fundraising, not looking to the town for any money.
