Kicking Daisies Celebrates In Fairfield

A concert at the Fairfield Theatre Company turned into a celebration for Caitlin and Carly Kalafus, Duran Visek and Ben Spremulli, better known as Kicking Daisies. The Milford-based band found out just hours before Friday night's show that they had won Disney's Next Big Thing contest.

"We are so happy," Duran told Radio Disney after learning the news, amid cheers from his band mates. "This is so cool. We are speechless and so excited."

With the win, Kicking Daisies will be featured on Radio Disney's next compilation CD, "Disney Jams 13." They will also add a "takeover" of Radio Disney and a celebratory show in Celebration, Fla., to their tour schedule this weekend.

The teenagers celebrated in style, by performing a sold-out show in the FTC's StageOne Theater. But first, they enjoyed some quality time with a few fans. A select group of VIPs had dinner with the band and plenty of time for photos. Speaking for his too-excited-to-speak daughter Ava, Southport's Troy Amuso said his family was happy the band met with their fans.

"[Ava] just got to meet the drummer, so she's pretty excited," Troy said.

But the band wasn't the only one celebrating Friday night. With the sold-out show, the kids raised money for the Fairfield Arts Center's latest project, a teen music center in downtown Fairfield. FAC board chairman Randy Weis said his group was delighted by the response to the show.

"We don't have many ways to engage the youth with art," Weis said. "What better way to do that than with a group that was really founded in Fairfield?"
