It took less than a week for the Edge Fitness Club in Fairfield to get enough patrons to make scouting for a parking spot sometimes as challenging as the workouts. That might have something to do with their desire to be more accepting than the competition.
"The idea of this whole club is we want people to feel they can come and work out and then if they want they can just hang out," said Nicole Falco, marketing director. She also teaches some of the fitness classes. While other popular gyms have capitalized on a policy of no "muscle heads," Falco said Edge Fitness wants them to feel just as welcome as people just beginning their fitness plans.
The club is the newest of six in the chain founded by Vincent Sansone in 1987. According to Falco, Sansone wasn't alone in making the clubs happen. "We're founded by brothers who love fitness, and staffed by employees who love fitness," she said. Falco began as an intern for Edge Fitness and started teaching classes. After graduating from college, they hired her as their marketing director.
For $20 a month, patrons get access to classes, free weights, personal training space, three cardio decks and an assortment of machines. Parents can bring their children to the on-site KidzKare for a nominal fee. There is also a juice bar, and should anyone feel the need to go online, WiFi is on its way.
The rapid membership growth at the new location wasn't surprising to Falco. She knew the community was familiar with the location, a former Linens and Things. It didn't hurt that Falco believes they have the best fitness option in the area. "We've been really successful, and we've gotten a great response," she said.
