Fairfielder Says 'No' to Hunting

The following letters were sent to TheDailyFairfield by Doug Wakefield of Fairfield. Wakefield is against a proposal to allow hunting in open spaces in town. If the proposal is approved, non-hunting residents wouldn't be permitted to use those spaces during hunting season in the fall and early winter.

Dear Mr. [Thomas] Steinke,

I am forwarding this to you as the Director of Conservation. Please forward it to the Conservation Commission.

Please consider the fact that weapons and the projectiles from those weapons do not observe boundary lines or discriminate from piercing any item that they may come in contact with. And while I am sure that the hunting population is safe and aware of the rules and regulations, accidents do occur. When open space boundaries encroach upon private property of the non-hunting approved areas, or a street side, you open the door for a disastrous possibility. Let's hope that it is not your child.

Please reconsider the proposed change of rulings that would allow hunting on open space in Fairfield, Conn.

Dear Mr. [Ken] Flatto,How are you going to live with one dead kid or adult by expanding the hunting areas to open spaces?Hunting exists now on private land, which would be more protected by its owners, thereby keeping the public safe. What few deer there are would be found there. We moved to this town because it seemed to have the values of good living, good education and a thoughtfulness of quality not found in other lower Fairfield County towns or cities.

It seems as though the interests of a few govern the well-being of us all. This refers to the softball field debacle as well. Much time was wasted on that. It should be a no-brainer that you tell your kids to wait for things until you can afford them. ... [and] with so many already having sacrificed their own budgets, it seems insulting to them to even have to vote.Do the right thing and veto, vote no, rewrite legislation, do whatever you have to do, to keep that kid from getting shot.Thank you,Doug Wakefield
