Fortunately, local residents don't need to face the devastating illness alone.

CancerCare, based in Norwalk, provides an array of free, professional support services. The organization relies on money from the annual CancerCare Fairfield WalkRun for Hope. This year's 10th edition of the race is Sunday, Sept. 11 on Jennings Beach.

CancerCare, founded in 1944, provides free, professional support services and information to help people manage the emotional, practical and financial challenges of cancer. Services include counseling and support groups over the phone, online and in-person, educational workshops, publications and financial and co-payment assistance.

Walkers and runners may join the 5K race that starts at 9 a.m.. It is a USATF-sanctioned and certified event. A Fun Run for kids follows at 10:15 a.m.

“Our 10th year of this event is an important milestone,” said Sandra Tripodi, CancerCare’s senior director of community engagement. “We are very grateful to the Fairfield community, the event committee and the many volunteers for their support and dedication every year.”

Two years ago, Michelle Jones of Bridgeport, a young mother, was about to embark on a new career when she faced a devastating breast cancer diagnosis.

“CancerCare’s excellent resources, financial assistance and support system helped eliminate some of the hardships that come with a cancer diagnosis,” Jones said. “Everyone at CancerCare was always so caring, understanding and genuinely ready to help in any way possible.”

While she was ill, her coworkers from MBI Inc. walked in her honor in the Walk/Run for Hope.

This year, Jones will participate in the event and walk as a survivor.

Registration fees are a $40 minimum donation per adult (13 and older); $20 minimum donation per child (12 and under); or $10 for the Fun Run only. Both individuals and teams can register in advance at http://community.cancercare.org/walkct
