Post Road Reopens In Darien After Fire On Electrical Wire

Update: Darien police said Route 1 has reopened as of 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Original story: DARIEN, Conn. — The Boston Post Road/Route 1 is closed Wednesday morning in Darien due to a burning electrical wire, police said. 

The closure between Gardiner Street and Hampton Road, near the Stamford border and Hindley Elementary School.

"A primary electrical wire over the roadway is burning and arcing, requiring the closure of US 1 in order to ensure safety to the motoring public and area residents," police said in a statement. 

"Eversource currently has electrical line crews on scene and is assessing the cause."  

Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to their destination Wednesday morning, police said. 

Darien Police officers are on the scene to assist with traffic flow and to ensure safety, police said. 

Detour signs have been deployed and officers will remain in the area until the situation is fully resolved, police said.

It is not known when the situation will be resolved nor when full traffic flow can resume. 

Repair work is expected to continue through the morning hours, police said.
