Covid-19: Outbreak Of Virus In Deer Population Could Be Trouble For Humans, Scientists Say For the first time, researchers are uncovering disconcerting evidence that COVID-19 is spreading amongst the deer population, which could spell trouble for humans. Researchers took nasal swabs from 360 white-tailed deer in the US between January and March 2021 when the number of COVID-19 cases was surging across the country, which found that more than 35 percent were previously infected or dealing with an active case. The latest study out of Ohio comes on the heels of research that found COVID-19 infections were prevalent in white-tailed deer in New York, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Illinois, and M…

Covid-19: New Study Finds Significant Virus Spread Among Deer Population A new study has found widespread COVID-19 infections among deer populations in Iowa. Researchers from the Penn State University found that more than 80 percent of white-tailed deer sampled in parts of Iowa between December of 2020 and January of 2021 tested positive for COVID-19, according to an announcement from the university on Wednesday, Nov. 3. “We found that 80 percent of the sampled deer in December were positive for SARS-CoV-2, which proportionally represents about a 50-fold greater burden of positivity than what was reported at the peak of infection in humans at the time,” said Sur…

Rare Virus Killing Deer In Parts Of Region Dozens of dead white-tailed deer found at separate locations in parts of the region are now being linked to a rare virus. After conducting tests, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)  confirmed that several white-tailed deer in the towns of Nelsonville and Cold Spring in Putnam County and near Goshen in Orange County died after contracting Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD).  EHD virus is carried by biting midges, small bugs often called no-see-ums or 'punkies,' according to the DEC.
