Tornado touchdowns were confirmed in both the Hudson Valley and Connecticut during severe storm activity in the region on Thursday, Aug. 27. The National Weather Service made the determinations late Friday night, Aug. 28 after surveying damage during the day. Hudson Valley Tornado The twister in the Hudson Valley happened just after 6:15 p.m. Thursday in Orange County in Montgomery in the area of Old Nealytown Road, according to the weather service. The National Weather Service has now confirmed that a tornado touched down on Long Island on Labor Day afternoon. The tornado touched down in eastern Suffolk County in Manorville, just north of Route 27 (Sunrise Highway) in the area of Dayton Avenue from 4:33 p.m. to 4:38 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2. After touching down on Dayton Avenue, the twister went northeast through the southern end of adjacent Rosewood Street and then across intersecting cross street of South Street. With rounds of strong thunderstorms now sweeping through, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21 for the entire area. Be on the lookout for rapidly changing weather conditions into the evening, the National Weather Service said. The chance for storm activity will continue for several hours after the watch ends, until 1 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22. Plane Struck By Lightning During Severe Storms Makes Emergency Landing At Bradley
A plane that was struck by lightning was diverted to Bradley International Airport for an emergency landing Tuesday evening. The flight, which originated in Manchester-Boston Regional Airport was on its way from New Hampshire to Orlando, Florida, when it was struck, airport officials said. *The aircraft landed safely at Bradley International Airport at approximately 7 p.m.," said Alisa D. The National Weather Service has confirmed that two additional tornadoes made landfall in western Connecticut during Tuesday's intense storms, bringing the total number to pummel the state to four. An EF1 tornado hit Winsted with reported maximum winds of 95 miles per hour, traveling for almost a mile, uprooting trees and damaging all in its path.
