Danbury's William Dickens, Comic Who Tried Out For Harlem Globetrotters, Dies At 61 A Danbury man who is being remembered for his comedy and "failed" attempts" at becoming a Harlem Globetrotter, has died. William Wallace Dickens III,  better known as Wilbur Dickens, died Friday, June 7 from complications following surgery.  Dickens was born and raised in Danbury where he spent the majority of his life working in the sign industry after his many failed attempts at becoming a Harlem Globetrotter.  His true occupation was providing comic relief. McDermott, known to everyone as “Polly,” died peacefully with her daughters at her side at the age of 87 on Feb. 27, 2019 at Broad Creek Care Center in Hilton Head, SC. She is survived by her two daughters, Megan McDermott (Steven Schafer) and Morna McDermott McNulty (Leonard), and four grandchildren: Merrill Hersam, Maren Hersam, Conor McNulty and Molly McNulty.
