Tributes are pouring in for a beloved NYPD officer who was killed alongside three others in an alleged drunk driving crash at a New York nail salon. Emilia Rennhack was off duty and getting her nails done when an SUV came barreling through the front window of Long Island’s Hawaii Nail & Spa, located in Deer Park on Commack Road, on Friday afternoon, June 28. Rennhack was pronounced dead at the scene alongside the salon’s owner, Jiancai Chen, age 37, of Bayside, Queens, according to Suffolk County Police. The identities have been released of four people killed, including a police officer, and nine injured after an allegedly drunk driver crashed an SUV into a shop at a New York strip mall. The incident happened on Long Island around 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 28, in the hamlet of Deer Park. The identities have been released of two men and two women all in their 20s who were killed in a horrific wrong-way crash on a stretch of I-95 in Connecticut. It happened at around 1:25 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 25 in New Haven County on the southbound side when a Chevrolet Silverado was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes in West Haven, Connecticut State Police said. Man Sentenced For $12M Ponzi Scheme That Included Victim From Fairfield County
A New York man was sentenced for his role in a $12 million Ponzi scheme that targeted nearly 50 victims from throughout the region and the nation between 2015 and 2017. Long Island resident Matthew Eckstein, age 52, of Syosset, was sentenced on Monday, July 11 to three-and-a-half to 10-and-a-half years in prison. Eckstein originally pleaded guilty to the charges on September 26, 2019, but later withdrew his plea. A pair of brothers who are Long Island natives have been identified as two of the victims of the condo collapse n Surfside, Florida. Dr. Brad Cohen, a Suffolk County native, from Dix Hills, was confirmed dead by the Miami-Dade Police on Friday, July 16. His body was found on Wednesday, July 7, the department said. His brother, Dr. Gary Cohen, age 58, who was also killed in the Tuesday, June 24 collapse, was identified earlier in the week. A Long Island accountant who worked for a pizzeria owner with locations in Fairfield and Westchester counties is facing prison time after he admitted to tax offenses. Suffolk County resident James Guerra, age 58, of Dix Hills, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of willful failure to collect and pay over withholding taxes following his arrest for turning a blind eye to his boss failing to pay taxes.
