Young Runner Outpaces the Adults

Alex Ostberg may be only 13, but he's already easily beating men twice his age. The young Darien runner placed third overall in the Bigelow Tea Community Challenge 5K in Southport on Sunday. His time of 17:10 was just 42 seconds behind the event's winner, Justin MacGregor.

"I felt great today," Alex said. "It was a really nice course, and it was perfect weather for running."

Alex started running competitively two summers ago. He ran in a few other 5Ks this spring, along with a 10K last weekend. His third-place finish in Southport on Sunday was not only his best placing, but also his personal best in the 5K. Alex even beat his dad, Peter Ostberg, by nearly three full minutes. Peter finished 25th overall in a time of 20:01.

MacGregor, 23, of Derby, took the top prize with his time of 16:28. Norwalk's Amy Fredericks, 44, was the top female finisher at 19:59. It was her fourth Bigelow win, after her three consecutive titles from 2002 to 2004.

About 620 runners competed in this year's 5K, up from 500 last year. An additional 175 people took part in the Fitness Walk at the same time, and 160 kids joined in the Fun Run before the race. "We had almost a thousand people in our race, which is pretty cool," said Cindi Bigelow, the event's sponsor."
