Whirlwind Divers Win 11th YMCA National Crown

Whirlwind Diving out of the New Canaan YMCA won its 11th YMCA National Championship title at the Hall of Fame Pool in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Whirlwind Diving, under the direction of Head Coach Joe Somma and assistant coaches Allison Coleman and Sergey Meshcherskiy, dominated the recent overall meet against five other YMCA teams. Whirlwind Diving scored a total of 321 points with Schroeder Diving of Wisconsin getting 314 points for second place. Marlins Diving of Greenwich YMCA came in sixth place with 40 points.

1-meter, 3-meter and platform events. Darien's Elizabeth Fitzpatrick had a silver hat trick in the 14-15 events, and Wilton's Katie Warburg won silvers medals in the 16-21 1-meter and 3-meter events.

All three divers had competed in the USA East National Championship meet the previous weekend in Knoxville, Tenn., where Whirlwind Diving came in third overall against 25 competitive Junior Olympic teams.

Sam Scribano won silver at the Tennessee meet, in the boys' 11 and under 3-meter event and was fourth in the 1-meter event. Tim Luz came in 11th in the 12-13 1-meter event and 13th on 3-meter. Lee Christensen got 10th on the 1-meter and 16th on the 3-meter. Jackson McGoldrick earned 16th on 1-meter and 11th on 3-meter in the boys 14-15 events. Elizabeth Fitzpatrick place sixth in each event in the 14-15 age group, and Katie Warburg took sixth in the 16-18 1-meter event and 21st in the 3-meter event.
