Runners Race the Heat in New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — The heat and humidity that has blanketed the area for the past two days didn't deter runners from showing up for Tuesday night's Summer Cross Country Series race at Waveny Park in New Canaan.

Perhaps the relative misery of racing 2.4 miles loved company. In any case, 85 participants sweated their way around the fields and trails of the park. Two former FCIAC high school stars, Doug Wright of Darien and Celeste Hoelzl of Wilton, proved the fastest in their respective divisions. Wright covered the course in 13:09, with Hoelzl placing 19th overall in 15:32.

The series continues next Tuesday with the Age Graded 5K, in which runners' times are adjusted by the computer based on their age and gender. Details on that event, and results from this week's race, are posted on the series website.
