Runners Go to Bat for Brain Cancer Research

GREENWICH, Conn. – Three runners from Greenwich are running in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday for Team B*CURED, which raises money for brain cancer research. They are part of a 10-runner team that has raised nearly $60,000 for the charity.

Marathoners Mike Duda, Dick Taggart and Tara Allen joined more than 40,000 runners at the Verrazano Narrows Bridge on Sunday morning for the start of the race, which traverses through the five boroughs of New York.

Duda made a promise during the NCAA tournament last March that if Virginia Commonwealth defeated Kansas, he would run a marathon. The team won, and Duda followed through on his promise. "I want to use the opportunity to raise some money for something good. B*CURED is an organization that funds brain cancer research grants," he said. "Every cent you give goes to help fight the disease that took the life of my bride's mom when she was just a kid. Now I have the opportunity to run in one of sport's most phenomenal spectacles. And as one who believes if you lose a bet, embrace and make the most of it."

Allen is a teacher at Darien High School and is running her first marathon. Taggart is also running his first marathon. He recently ran a half-marathon with his daughter, Margaret, a sophomore at Bucknell, and will celebrate his 50th birthday at the marathon.
