After 1 1/2 innings of baseball, and two rain delays, the Fairfield Ludlowe vs. Darien CIAC Class L state baseball tournament game was postponed until Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The game will again be played at Kiwanis Field in Fairfield. The game will resume in the bottom of the second inning, with Ludlowe leading, 1-0.
Darien (8-12) is the 25th seed in the tournament, while Ludlowe (18-5), fresh off the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title victory last Thursday is the No. 8 seed.
Thunder could be heard in the distance throughout the first inning and the skies darkened as the second inning began. When lightning was seen and rain began to fall, umpires called the first delay of the game. After about 20 minutes, the rain passed and a half hour was given to the teams to warm up and assure the fact that no other lightning was in the area, per state rules. Just as the game resumed, the skies darkened again and after a walk to Ludlowe's Alex Malone by Darien starting pitcher Ricky Hodges, lightning was seen and the game was delayed again.
With no lights on the field and the fact that state officials heard it was raining harder in Norwalk and moving toward Fairfield, the decision was made to postpone the game.
In the bottom of the first inning Ludlowe nearly mounted a thunderous rally, but Hodges pitched out of a second and third, one out situation, only allowing one run in the inning. That run came on a single by rightfielder Tom Nagy, scoring second baseman Nick Rosamondo, who had walked, stole second base and moved onto third on a fielder's choice groundout by designated hitter Max Sineau.
Steve Guasco was the starting pitcher for Ludlowe. He allowed just one hit in two innings of work.
