NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Hope Krause probably would have finished near the front of this week's cross country race at Waveny Park. Thanks to the special nature of the event, she ran away from everyone.
As another of the "specialty" races in the 32-year-old Summer Cross Country Series, this week's event was the Women's Shortcut Race. While male competitors covered a 2.8-mile course, the women were directed onto four shortcuts on the route, cutting their total distance down by about a third of a mile.
As a result, New Canaan's Krause came storming out of the woods more than a minute ahead of her closest pursuer, Abby Markowitz of Greenwich. Markowitz crossed the line in 14:31, a 5:51 per mile average. Wilton's Celeste Hoelzl was third, and the first male didn't cross the finish until Darien's Charlie Baird hit the line in 16:20, a 5:44 pace.
An even 100 runners completed the course, as the series continues to draw big fields for every race. Next week's event is a Handicap Race, in which the slowest runner will start first, followed at varying intervals by increasingly faster runners.
Details on the series, as well as results from completed races, are available on the Club Connecticut website.
