Montgelas Ties for 3rd in State Golf

Oronoque Country Club frustrated Becky Montgelas for three days. Still, the Darien woman managed to finished tied for third in the Connecticut State Amateur Golf Championship. She finished 54 holes with a total of 248, six shots behind winner Erica Barnes.

Montgelas, who plays out of Wee Burn, shot 83 in Wednesday's closing round. She finished third about 10 years ago, but the performance was her best in recent years. "The golf course was really challenging,'' said Montgelas, a 10-time club champion at Wee Burn. "It was short, but really tight. The greens were tough, and even the short putts had a lot of break in them. It's a nice course, just very challenging."

Montgelas, 51, entered the final round three shots behind Barnes. Scores were high on the final day – no players broke 80 – and Barnes held on to win by three shots over Jen Holland. Montgelas and Lida Tingley tied for third. "I felt frustrated in the way I played, but they were frustrated, too,'' Montgelas said. "So I guess I can be happy." She credited her husband, Mark, for carrying her bag throughout the tournament. "I really like to walk, so I appreciate that,'' Becky said. "We're still going to be married after this."

Wilton's Penny Jones, who plays out of Rolling Hills, tied for seventh at 252. Stamford's Debbie Johnson finished at 255, tied for 10th with two other players. Complete results are available here.
