Darien's Rob Crane Sails To Best Olympic Finish Yet

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien native Rob Crane completed the eighth of his 10 Olympic races Friday morning with his best finish yet, eighth place in the Laser category.

Currently in 26th place, Crane appears to be out of the running for a medal, but Friday's finish was encouraging after the rocky start to his Olympic experience.

Crane has improved in each round, finishing 19th in the seventh race early Friday. He was as high as sixth place in the eighth race, then fell back to 10th before recovering for an eighth-place finish.

Crane's time in race eight was 59:02, or 1:34 behind race winner Tom Slingsby of Australia. Slingsby currently sits in first place overall with 23 points.

Sailors compete in 10 races and are scored on how they finished. The worst finish is thrown out, and the sailor with the lowest score at the end of 10 races is the winner.

Crane has a net point total of 162 after throwing out his 42nd place finish in the first two rounds.

His final two races of the 2012 Olympics will take place Saturday at 7 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The events will stream live on NBC's Olympics page.
