Darien (19-3-1) will meet Fairfield Prep at 2 p.m. at Ingalls Rink at Yale University in New Haven. The fourth-seeded Blue Wave advanced to the final with a 3-1 win over top-seeded Notre Dame of Fairfield in Wednesday’s semifinals. Third-seeded Fairfield Prep (12-4-3) beat Notre Dame of West Haven, 4-3 in overtime, in the semifinals.
The state final berth is the culmination of a sensational season for Darien and coach Chris Gerwig. After losing its first game to Hamden, Darien went on an 18-game unbeaten streak before losing to Notre Dame of Fairfield, 2-1, in its final regular season game. The Blue Wave won their first two games in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference before losing to New Canaan, 5-2.
Darien has allowed just two goals in three state tournament games, beating Greenwich, 3-1, and South Windsor, 5-0, before beating Notre Dame. The Blue Wave’s commitment to defense has been evident all season, as Darien has three or more goals only twice this season.
Fairfield Prep has won two of the last three Division I hockey championships. The Jesuits defeated Notre Dame of West Haven, 3-2, in last year’s final. Prep has won eight titles since 2000.
